Burn treatment advice

Burns may be related to, or a result of, a more life-threatening situation. A first degree burn is superficial and causes local inflammation of the skin. Any constricting clothing and jewelry should be removed to prevent these items from exerting a tourniquet like effect after the development of burn edema. Between 50,000 – 70,000 people are hospitalized for burns every year in the United States, 30 – 40% of whom are children younger than 15 years of age. Partial-thickness burns damage a ‘partial thickness’ of the skin, and require medical burn treatment. Concurrently with airway and circulatory management, emergency personnel must make an effort to stop the burning process. Clothing of adherent material like nylon should be immediately removed.
